Ignore The Fluoride Fake News
Many people are talking about fake news these days. It’s when someone passes off misleading or false information as the real deal. When it come to fluoride, this has been going on for a while. Back when fluoride was first being added to tap water, a few people claimed it was part of a giant conspiracy that would hurt us all. (Here’s a hint: That’s not true.)
If fluoride is safe and even good for you, why do some people say otherwise? Usually, people mean well but misunderstand the data. For example, incredibly large amounts of fluoride are harmful to you. The same is true for calcium and even water. That’s why some people say fluoride is a problem when it’s not — they confuse incredibly large doses with all doses.
Some post memes or sites with fluoride fake news because it’s a money-making operation. These sites usually sell ebooks or have a ton of advertisements that earn them money. It’s the age-old scam: Create a fake problem, then sell a solution to the problem you just created.
Why Fluoride Leads To Strong Teeth
Then what does fluoride do for you? It makes your teeth stronger.
- Fluoride makes your enamel more resistant to tooth decay or similar damage.
- Fluoride actually reverses microscopic amounts of damage.
- With children, fluoride makes their adult teeth stronger even before they fully come through the gums.
The Truths About Fluoride
Because our dentists are highly trained in dentistry, they know the truth about fluoride. Here are several common cases where fake news gets it wrong about fluoride.
MYTH: Fluoride is a dangerous, man-made chemical.
Some people act like fluoride is some kind of chemical cooked up in a lab somewhere. However, fluoride is a mineral. It’s completely natural, too. While it’s true that the kind of fluoride used in fluoride treatments and toothpaste is a chemical, everything is a chemical. Even water is a chemical.
MYTH: Fluoride is unnatural in drinking water.
When fluoride was first added to some communities’ tap water, a few complained that doing so was unnatural. However, this is completely wrong. Being a natural mineral, fluoride is found in some well water naturally.
That’s why people first made the connection between fluoride and healthy teeth. People with fluoride already in their drinking water had much better teeth than people who did not.
MYTH: Fluoride is used in poison so it’s going to hurt you eventually.
The key to understanding why this is a myth is that fluoride comes in many different forms. There is a version of fluoride used in some poison. However, the version you get in tap water, toothpaste, and fluoride treatments at our Norton Shores, MI dental office is not.
To further illustrate this point, take salt. It’s called sodium chloride, meaning it has chlorine in it. But table salt is nowhere near the same as the chlorine you use to clean pools. Just because it has one word in common does that mean the two substances are identical.
MYTH: Fluoride is linked to lower IQs.
Again, fluoride can be bad for you if you take way too much. The same is true for calcium, potassium, and salt, and just about anything. That’s why a study linking fluoride to lower IQ scores is incorrect.
In this study, they compared people who drank water containing up to 8 milligrams of fluoride per liter. Those people did have lower IQ scores. But in the United States, you get 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter. That’s over 10 times less! That’s also why fluoride is completely safe here. You wouldn’t stop taking vitamin-C just because some people take mega doses and look all orange, right?
